Cypriot law is based closely on British law and, although not entirely the same, it’s reassuringly familiar in many ways. This has always made the Republic of Cyprus an attractive retirement location for British retirees and now that it’s a member of the EU, it’s more attractive than ever.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is not a member of the EU and since the division of the island in 1974, it has developed its own rules and legal system. It’s important that you obtain professional advice before retiring to either part of Cyprus, but it’s particularly important if you plan to retire to the TRNC.
