Cypriots are justly famous for their hospitality and warm welcome and this is reflected in all aspects of daily life on the island. There's a comfortable, familiar feel to the Republic of Cyprus thanks in part to the British administration from 1878 to1960. The legacy of that period is reflected in the legal and financial sectors, the island's good communications network and the fact that 90 per cent of the Greek Cypriot population speaks good English.
This familiarity, combined with a fascinating history, an abundance of culture and a Mediterranean location, makes Cyprus a favourite spot for retirees. It's easy to feel at home on the island but it's also important to understand that Cyprus today is a mix of Greek, Turkish and British influences. Understanding the important cultural differences and being aware of ,and sensitive to, the political situation on the island (explained briefly in our Cyprus Law and order section) will help you integrate more easily into daily life in Cyprus.
